Collaboration Overview

Ahead of the 2028 centennial anniversary of bilateral relations between Canada and Japan, digital artist EEPMON is collaborating with Noh Master Naohiko Umewaka by contributing his digital artistry for a special performance at the National Noh Theatre. The performance commemorates the 55th memorial anniversary of Noh Master, Naoyoshi Umewaka. Designed as an international cultural bridge, the initiative weaves together the traditions of classical Japanese theatre—recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity—with modern Canadian digital design, creating an artistic dialogue that connects historical heritage with the digital age.

In addition to his creative contribution, EEPMON will participate in a special panel discussion titled, Yūgen and the Calculating Machine – All Things Beyond AI. Yūgen (幽玄) is a traditional Japanese aesthetic concept that describes a profound, mysterious sense of beauty that is felt rather than explicitly seen.

The panel features distinguished speakers including:

∙ Hideaki Koizumi, Ph.D. – Fellow, Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, University of Tokyo

Marking their first exhibition collaboration, the Ottawa Art Gallery partnered with the Embassy of Canada to Japan in Tokyo to present an international exhibition of EEPMON’s groundbreaking generative art. Digital Worlds: The Generative Art of EEPMON, on view until May 12, 2026 at the Prince Takamado Gallery in Tokyo, is a celebration of cultural connection, collaboration, and creative innovation.

EEPMON is featured in the print issue of National Geographic Japan (April, 2026).

The feature explores his “High-Tech, High-Touch” philosophy, specifically highlighting:

∙ The Weather Art Generator: A new work that visualizes and converges real-time weather data from Ottawa and Tokyo, creating a living digital bridge between the two cities.

∙ Canadian Census Data Art: The generative piece Constellations, created during his residency at Library and Archives Canada and showcased at the Canada Pavilion during Expo 2025 Osaka.

The publication coincides with EEPMON’s solo exhibition, Digital Worlds, currently on display at the Embassy of Canada to Japan’s Prince Takamado Gallery in Tokyo through May 12, 2026.
